August will see an Sikorsky S38 seaplane replica embark on a trip across the Atlantic Ocean.
 

July 15: August will see an Sikorsky S38 seaplane replica embark on a trip across the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for European charities Aviation Without Borders and Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen (Wings of Help).

The aircraft, piloted by owner Tom Schrade and assisted by former world and European gliding champion Bruno Gantenbrink and astronaut and cosmonaut Dr Ulf Merbold will depart Minneapolis in the USA and fly through Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England to Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg in Germany. The aircraft is a combination of original wings and a replica fuselage.

Famous for its appearance in the 2004 movie The Aviator, the S38’s Zebra paint scheme commemorates American adventurers and photographers Martin and Osa Johnson, who attempted to circumnavigate the world in an S38 in the 1930s.

Each mile of the flight can be sponsored for €10 with the donor receiving a signed certificate from the pilot.
